He is a standard bearer of UNESCO, the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization. There are three pillars far the orientation of this man. Education is far him a human right and the faundation far a peaceful society. Science is a unique tao! far the path towards a sustainable world. Culture is an enabler and driver of sustainable development drawing on cultura! diversity and heritage.
ABOUT HANS D'ORVILLE
Hans D'Orville, a German citizen, studied at the University of Konstanz, in Germany, and obtained there his Masters and his doctorate in economics.
In 1975 he joined the United Nations Secretariat in New York and has held different positions of a prominent leve! in the UN, UNDP and UNESCO in a career spanning 37 years. At the United Nations he was Secretary of the Committee on Conferences; having joined the United Nations Development Programme/UNDP, he served in the Director-General's Office, where he was also in charge of UNDP's Governing Council comprising at that time 48 countries.
Between 1984 and 1995, he was assigned from UNDP to serve as Executive Coordinator of the InterAction Council of farmer Heads of State and Government, chaired by farmer German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, with Giulio Andreotti as Italian member and many other politica! leaders, such as Pierre Trudeau, Gerald Ford, James Callaghan, Takeo Fukuda or Olusegun Obasanjo. Returning to executive positions in UNDP in 1995, he took charge unti! 2000 of its Infarmation Technologies far Development Programme.
In October 2000, he was appointed by the UNESCO Director-Generai as Director of UNESCO's Bureau far Strategie Planning. In 2007 he was promoted to the rank of Assistant Director-Generai far Strategie Planning. His main responsibilities are the development and implementation of the programme planning and budget worldwide. Manifald other roles include intercultural dialogue and the culture of peace; assistance to least developed countries; and UN refarm. He is also a member of the UN System Staff College in Torino.
In addition, he served on the Executive Committee of the Africa Leadership Forum, Nigeria and as an Advisor to the Independent Commission of Population and Quality of Life, the Independent Commission on Forests and Sustainable Development, the Valencia Tercer Milenio Programme, the Guangzhou Asian Games 2010 and the Aichi and the Shanghai World Expositions. He also is a member of the International Advisory Council of the Global Initiative far Arts, Culture and Society of the Aspen Institute, Washington D.C.
Hans D'Orville is also the author of several publications on multilateral relations and on specific issues involving Africa.
